Who is Larry Itliong? Gayle Romasanta is Here To Tell Us

Romasanta Reads from "Journey For Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong" at Miramar College, October 25th

October 25, 2019

--Who is Larry Itliong? Gayle Romasanta wants to tell you. In a recent children's book "Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong" the reader is invited on a journey into the life of a little known, but incredibly important Filipino-American figure.

Co-authored by Romasanta with Doctor Dawn Mabalon, this non-fiction account of Itliong's life as an immigrant and then a labor organizer and activist, details the Delano Grape Strike and Boycott that Cesar Chavez and the chicanx community are often credited with starting.

What this book brings to light is the influence of Filipino immigrants in the struggle for worker's rights, and specifically the role of Larry Itliong, a leading Filipino labor organizer who played an integral part in initiating the Delano strike, ultimately uniting the competing Filipino and Mexican unions under United Farm Workers (UFW) banner.

We had the privilege of having Romasanta in-studio for an in-depth conversation about the book, about Filipino history and the life and legacy of Larry Itliong. Watch her read an excerpt of the book, below.

You can catch Gayle Romasanta along with Miramar College's Professor of Filipino Studies Judy Patacsil, tonight, October 25th at Miramar College from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. in room L-105.

Tune in to Living Better In San Diego for our full interview with both Romasanta and Professor Patacsil next Sunday, November 3rd.
