Capital Cities

One of the more unique paths to the stages of Coachella, Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian met via a Craigslist ad, and after a successful run as commercial jingle composers, the duo formed Capital Cities in 2010. The first single off their self-titled debut EP Safe and Sound was a top ten hit, reaching #1 on the Alt charts, and appearing in television shows, movies, commercials, and pretty much everywhere else you could think of, and the music video (see below) was nominated for a Best Music Video Grammy, and took home the 2013 MTV VMA for Best Visual Effects. Coming off the popularity of the single, the duo added Spencer Ludwig on trumpet, Nick Merwin on lead guitar, Manny Quintero on bass, and Channing Holmes on drums, to hit the road for their first North American tour dates. Another FM 949 alum, Capital Cities took to the stage at 2013's SPF 949 on Saturday, June 8th at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre, and became the surprise hit of the show, covering Pink Floyd's Breathe, and sending a sea of beach balls into a frenzied crowd of San Diegans. Already seasoned Coachella vets, Simonian's beard was named Rolling Stone Magazine's best beard at the 2014 festival, describing his long facial locks as "Rasputin-like". What facial hair styles can you look forward to when they take the stage Friday in Indio? Guess you'll have to wait and find out.
