Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard and Mike McCready on Why You Should Share Your Mental Health Story

The duo discuss how radio is the perfect avenue for talking about mental health

September 7, 2020

On Wednesday, September 23, join RADIO.COM as artists, athletes, and individuals across the nation come together to discuss the importance of talking about mental health and share their journey on the two-hour I’m Listening broadcast

Ahead of this year’s show, we’re looking back at past I’m Listening interviews and sharing some of our favorite conversations.

Mike McCready and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam have been longtime mental health champions. The two sat down with RADIO.COM in 2018 to discuss the importance of using radio and the I’m Listening broadcast as an avenue to discuss mental health and suicide prevention.

“The I’m Listening campaign is a brilliant use of radio,” Gossard said.

“What a strategic, cool way of engaging in a really serious issue and using the power of radio to make more available and humanize this important issue of mental health and suicide. By letting peoples voices tell their stories, people are going to be interested in that, people are going to be affected by it in a positive way, and they’re going to feel like these radio stations are doing something that is cool, helpful, beautiful, and proactive,” he added.

“I think if you’re hesitant to talk about suicide or dark thoughts that this seems like it is an easier way to do it by actually calling in and hearing other peoples stories you can relate to,” McCready said.

Details regarding this year’s I’m Listening broadcast will be announced on September 9. Ahead of this year’s broadcast, we’re inviting you to share your story and be a part of this year’s show.

RADIO.COM’s I’m Listening initiative aims to encourage those who are dealing with mental health issues to understand they are not alone. If you or anyone you know is struggling with depression or anxiety, know that someone is always there. Additionally, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-273-8255.
